Op 19 september 1928 ging de film Steamboat Willie van Walt Disney in première. Het was een van de eerste tekenfilms met geluid. Vaak is beweerd dat Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie zijn debuut maakte. Dat is echter niet waar. Het muisje was eerder in 1928, samen met zijn vriendinnetje Minnie, al te zien in de korte films Plane Crazy en The Gallopin’ Gaucho. Dit waren echter stille films, waardoor de bijna acht minuten durende tekenfilm Steamboat Willie wel de eerste film is waarin Mickey Mouse te horen was. Het stemgeluid van de muis kwam van niemand minder dan Walt Disney zelf. Later werd de stem van Mickey Mouse onder meer nog ingesproken door Jimmy MacDonald en Wayne Alwine. Na het succes van Steamboat Willie werd Plane Crazy nog een keer uitgebracht met geluid. In 1994 werd Steamboat Willie door cartoonkenners als dertiende opgenomen in de lijst van de vijftig beste cartoons aller tijden.
