In deze zwart-wit, cinéma vérité-documentaire zijn schrijver James Baldwin en komiek/activist Dick Gregory in het West Indian Student Centre in Londen gepassioneerd in gesprek met een overwegend zwart Brits publiek. De film laat iets zien wat uitzonderlijk is voor die tijd: een ongecensureerd gesprek over de zwarte ervaring, alsof er geen witte mensen bij zijn. In dit openhartige, bijna intieme publieksgesprek worden vele thema's besproken die in de VS en UK spelen. Baldwins visie op wat het betekent zwart te zijn in Amerika, illustreert hij met het antwoord dat hij een witte Europeaan gaf die vraagt naar zijn afkomst, maar geen genoegen neemt het antwoord: “Ik was ooit de Nikker van Baldwin”. Een tijdscapsule die nog steeds relevant is.
