Mike Ainsell (azaz Árnyék) hároméves börtönbüntetéséből szabadul. Felesége hazavárja, munkát is kapna barátja edzőtermében. Azonban Laura, a felesége és Mike, a legjobb barátja, a szabadulása előtt pár nappal autóbalesetet szenvednek és meghalnak. Árnyék a temetésre menet találkozik egy különös idegennel, aki magát Szerdának (Wednesday) hívja. Felbérli Árnyékot, aki így Szerdát kísérve egy ijesztő és hallucinogén utazásra indul keresztül Amerikán. Megkísérti halott felesége szelleme, aki csak az első a megjelenő különös lények közül.
