Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του '60 ο τότε πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ John Kennedy ανήγγειλε την τελική φάση της προσπάθειας για την αποστολή αστροναυτών στη Σελήνη. Ο Ιούλιος του 1969 βρίσκει τη Γη χωρίς τον Kennedy που έχει δολοφονηθεί, στο Βιετνάμ ο πόλεμος κλιμακώνεται, οι Beatles ηχογραφούν το τελευταίο δίσκο, και ένας νεαρός ετοιμάζει μια συναυλία σε κάποιο μέρος που λέγεται Woodstock. Στις 20 Ιουλίου 1969 το διαστημόπλοιο Apollo 11, με πλήρωμα τρείς αστροναύτες, πέρασε στην ιστορία καθώς προσεδαφιζόταν στην επιφάνεια του δορυφόρου της Γης. Το γεγονός μεταδίδεται απ' ευθείας από την τηλεόραση και ο Neil Armstrong είναι ο πρώτος άνθρωπος που περπάτησε στο γκρίζο χώμα της Σελήνης. Για να συμβεί όμως αυτό προηγήθηκαν χρόνια προσπαθειών της ομάδας επιστημόνων της NASA που είχε αναλάβει το τεράστιο εγχείρημα του διαστημικού προγράμματος "Apollo".
