Mladý redaktor Lorenz má za úkol připravit senzační článek. Protože je bez nápadu, využije rady číšníka a seznámí se s bývalým advokátem panem Havlenou, který za viržínko a koňáček už mnohým vypomohl svou fantazií. Narážka mladého novináře, že není papoušek, ho vyprovokuje k soudničce o neslušném papouškovi, pro kterého za urážku na cti musel do vězení jeho majitel. Článek vyjde. Šéfredaktor však není spokojen, a nejen on, ozve se i odborná veřejnost, protože prý kvůli neslušným výrokům papouška na adresu sousedky nelze potrestat jeho majitele. Pan Havlena se ale nevzdá – jako důkaz zakoupí papouška, naučí ho několika neslušným výrazům a donutí i svou sousedku paní Staňkovou, aby ho žalovala. Chce dokázat, že pravdu má on...
